Continuing Ms. Cerda’s theme of turning STEM–>STEAM, we completed a unit on the water cycle where we demonstrated a cloud in a jar with Pre-K, Kinder, and 1st graders. Then we took our mess and made a colorful art project out of what would have just been the cleanup! The students started by studying the water cycle and types of clouds. We researched both of these things together on the internet (demonstrating safe search) and by watching BrainPop lessons. Then we began the demonstration! The students worked in pairs to add colored water to their “cloud” (shaving cream on water in a cup). Once their clouds were full of the colorful water, precipitation started! Their faces lit up when their clouds started “raining” this colorful water. Their paper towels for cleanup were then made into art as the students added more colorful drops. As we continue this lesson, look for us to make a Rain Machine and experiments testing condensation. For more pictures of this project please check here.
